Last Friday evening, the Onekama Lady Portagers faced off against rival Frankfort in their 2024 district finals game hosted at Mesick. Despite a valiant effort by the Lady Portagers, Onekama fell just short in a 53-47 loss to close their 2023-24 campaign.
After the game, coach Tracy Bennett said, "The Lady Portagers fought to the very end like always. Just wasn’t our night for putting the ball in the hole. [We] did everything wonderfully on defense — just couldn’t get that ball to fall for us on offense, which I think was the difference maker in the game itself. Frankfort was finding the bottom of the net and we were not. We were 15 of 54 (27.8%) on the floor for two-point field goals, and 21.4% from three-point range, hitting only 3 of 14. It also was hard to have three of our guards fouled out [Callie Sinke, Heather Zielinski, and Ava Mauntler]. Sad to see our senior Lexie Pringle go. Lots to look forward to with the youth on the team and their athleticism."
Freshmen Ava Mauntler and Delaney McCarthy stepped up on Friday night, scoring 21 points and 15 points, respectively. Graduating from the team is senior Lexie Pringle.
Thank you for such an exciting season, girls! Us in the Onekama journalism and yearbook room are already looking forward to covering your next season.
