ONEKAMA VOLLEYBALL TAKES TOURNAMENT TITLE
On Saturday, the Onekama High School varsity volleyball team claimed the championship trophy at their home tournament, dropping only two sets over seven hours of tournament play.
Sophie Wisniski led the Portagers with 37 kills, with strong support from Mairin McCarthy with 25 kills, Ashley McGrady with 16, and Ashlyn Blackmore with 15. Carly Bennett finished with 64 assists, averaging 5.3 per set.
The Portagers were a force at the net, with McCarthy contributing 12 solo blocks. The team showed poise and consistency at the service line as well. Wisniski completed 50 serves with zero errors, while McCarthy served up 11 aces and Ellery McIsaac added 9 aces.
“It feels great to have won our last home tournament as a senior,” said Wisniski. “I think our team has come a long way, and every game we continue to improve. I am happy to be playing with this group of ladies for my final year.”
Onekama defeated Grand Traverse Academy 25-17, 25-21, then split with Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s 25-13, 15-25. Onekama defeated Buckley 25-16, 25-14, and split with Hart 25-21, 22-25. In afternoon tournament play, Onekama topped GTA 25-12, 25-7, and finished the championship match with a victory over St. Mary’s 25-10, 25-20.
Next up for the Portagers: a home match against rival Frankfort on Tuesday night.
