3rd & 4th Girls at Half Time

Once again the third and fourth grade girls entertained the crowd at half time.  There was plentiful applause for the girls' buckets!     The girls are coached by Heidi Wisniski and Dennis McCarthy.  The girls meet several times a week to practice basketball  fundamentals, emphasis on FUN. Onekama School Hosts Elementary Girls Clinic

On Saturday mornings, the gymnasium of Onekama Consolidated Schools has been alive with action.

Girls ranging from Kindergarten through sixth grade have been hard at work learning the fundamentals of basketball, with quite a bit of fun in the mix, too. For the sixth year, the school has hosted a winter girls’ basketball clinic for elementary students.

There are two sessions: one for Kindergarten through fourth grade; another for fifth and sixth graders who are ready for more advanced drills and guided scrimmages.

The clinic is coached by Heidi Wisniski and Dennis McCarthy, with assistance provided by the JV and Varsity girls’ squads of Onekama School.

“We have received such great feedback from the players and the community,” said McCarthy. “Our main goals are to expose girls to the sport at a young age, and to give children an opportunity to be active during these winter months.”

This year, the clinic attracted students from neighboring schools as well. Students from Bear Lake, Frankfort, and Manistee took part in the learning and fun.

Additionally, third and fourth grade clinic participants played in two exhibition scrimmages during the halftime of two Onekama High School games. This gave the students a chance to show off their budding skills to their community, and to experience what it is like to play in front of a crowd.

“The clinic was really fun,” said Onekama fourth grader Madison Gutowski. “I learned what the different positions were and how to play as part of a team.”

“My favorite part was playing in the scrimmages,” added Gutowski. “I want to be on the high school team some day, and now I know what that will feel like. It’s going to be awesome.”
