Putting the FUN in Fundamentals

Onekama School Offers Youth Basketball Camp

The Onekama School gymnasium has had a busy past two weeks, as the school hosted a series of basketball camps for area youth.

During the week of June 13, two sessions were held for elementary and middle school boys. These camps were organized by OHS boys’ varsity coach Nathan Bradford, with members of the high school basketball team serving as counselors.

"This is my eighth year running the boys’ summer basketball camp,” commented Bradford. “Every year it has grown, and again this year we had a great turnout.”

Campers were provided a basketball and t-shirt along with great instruction. Explained Bradford, “Two years ago I realized that many of these kids do not have a basketball at home, so I asked our Athletic Boosters if they would help to provide a basketball to each camper and help to keep the costs down so every child who wants can attend.  The program has been a success and now I know that every child has a chance to go home and practice the fundamentals and drills I teach them."

Camps for elementary and middle school girls were held the week of June 20. These sessions were coached by Jim Armstrong, OHS girls’ varsity coach; Tracy Bennett, OHS junior varsity coach; with assistance provided by members of the girls high school team. This year’s camp had the highest turnout yet.

“Our goal was to teach and reinforce the fundamentals, encourage sportsmanship and teamwork, and to provide a fun camp,” said Armstrong. “It was great to see so many kids come out to learn, play the game, and stay active during the summer.”
