Author Johnathan Rand Speaks to Onekama Students

From the moment students entered through the doors of Onekama Consolidated Schools on Monday morning, greeted by a wall of fog, it was clear that this was not going to be a typical day of school.

A fog machine in the school hallway set the stage for a special guest: author Johnathan Rand.

Rand, a Michigan author best known for his suspense-filled Michigan Chillers and American Chillers book series, came to Onekama School to speak to students about his experiences as an author. His visit was the kick off to “March is Reading Month,” a month-long celebration of reading.

The author talk was presented to all students kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as select middle school classes.

We are super-excited to have Johnathan Rand kick off our reading month celebration.  His books are easily the most popular library books for our students.  His talk with them today has really inspired a renewed interest in reading and writing for them,” stated Onekama media center specialist Maranda Chisholm.

Rand told students how he got his start as an author and where he finds inspiration for his books. He encouraged students to read often and with joy, and to write stories of their own.

Students were engaged, inspired, and amused by the author’s visit. “It was an amazing experience, and he was completely hilarious,” commented Onekama fifth grader Jennifer Kmiecik.
