Beach Bums Reading Assembly

Suntan motivates students to “read around the bases.”

BUMMED About Reading? Not These Students!

Onekama Hosts Beach Bum’s Mascot

Onekama Elementary students will tell you that reading is anything but boring.

In celebration of March is Reading Month, students have been busy…acting out scenes from their favorite books, carrying poems in their pockets to read to passersby, writing and illustrating their own books, guessing the number of books in the school library, listening to read-alouds from “mystery” guest readers, and of course, reading up a storm.

Onekama teachers have been hard at work finding creative ways to motivate their students to increase the number of minutes they read each day. On March 19, they received some help from a special guest: Suntan, the mascot of the Traverse City Beach Bums baseball team.

Students gathered for a reading pep assembly for March is Reading month, and to their surprise, Suntan and his crew entered the Onekama School gym in a whirl of excitement. They were met with cheers from students and staff.

The purpose of Suntan’s visit was to encourage students to participate in the “Read Around the Bases” contest sponsored by the Beach Bums. Students keep track of the number of books read over the course of the month and turn in their entry forms to their classroom teachers.

Students have the chance to win up to two tickets to a Beach Bums game this summer.

Suntan helped students dance, sing, and cheer their way through the high-energy assembly, and his message to students was clear: Keep reading!

On March 19th we went to a
